BG Kim, Tae Up graduated from the Korea Military Academy (KMA) and was commissioned as an Infantry Officer in 1987. His professional military education includes the Infantry Basic Officers Course (OBC), Advanced Officers Course (AOC), ROKA Intelligence School, and ROK Army College. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from the Korea Military Academy, Masters of Arts in Strategic Security from Hansung University, and a Doctor of Philosophy in International Policy from the College of International Policy at Washington International University.

BG Kim’s initial assignment was in the 15th Infantry Division (ID), where he served as a Platoon Leader from 1987 to 1988, and the Presidential Security Unit from 1989 to 1990. Upon completion of OAC in 1991, he took command as the Company Commander of the 103rd Mechanized Infantry Battalion, CAPMECHDIV from 1991 to 1992, and 118th Mechanized Infantry Battalion, 30th MID from 1992 to 1994. In 1995, BG Kim served as the Battle Captain for the 1st Combat Support Coordination Group, US 8th Army, and later, S-1 Planner for the US 34th Support Group until 1997. From 1997 to 1998, BG Kim was deployed overseas as the UN PKO Observer to Indo-Pakistan.

Upon his return to the Republic of Korea, BG Kim was served as the S-3 for the 3rd Battalion, 12th ID from 1998 to 1999. After graduating from the ROK Army Staff College, he served as the TREX Officer, G3, 9th Corps from 1999 to 2000. BG Kim completed his second overseas deployment to Kyrgyzstan as a Linguist Officer for the 924th Medical Support Group from 2001 to 2002. He was later assigned as the OPS Plans Officer for the 9th ID from 2002 to 2004. Upon promotion to LTC, he took command of the 2nd Battalion, 9th ID from 2004 to 2006 and was deployed overseas to MNF-I HQ as the CMO Planner for 7 months upon completing Battalion command.

BG Kim served as the Executive Officer to the Deputy Commanding General, CFC from 2011 to 2012, and as the Chief of Exercise Branch, CFC from 2012 to 2014. Upon promotion to BG, he was assigned as the Chief of Operations Branch from 2014 to 2015 and later as the Deputy C5 from 2015 to April 2016. Currently, BG Kim is serving as the Deputy Commanding General-ROK of the 2ID/RUCD.

His awards and commendations include the Republic of Korea Chief of Staff of the Army Commendation, Foreign Institution Appreciation Award, Republic of Korea Presidential Commendation, the Foreign Institution Commendation, Republic of Korea Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Commendation, the United Nations Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Legion of Merit.

BG Kim is married to the former Lim, Booja, and has two children.
