Brigadier General Heo, Tae Keun
Deputy Commanding General - ROK, Eighth Army
Born in 1966, Brigadier General Heo is a native of Busan City. He received his commission in 1989 from Korea Military Academy.
As a fresh lieutenant he served as a Platoon Leader in the Joint Security Area, Panmoonjum, from 1990 to 1992. From 1993 to 1995 he served as a Company Commander in Capital Defense Corps, 4th Battalion Commander of 93th Regiment, 31st Division from 2006 to 2008, and successfully fulfilled his responsibilities as a 169th Regiment Commander of 51st Division from 2012 to 2014.
BG Heo specializes in Defense Policy. Throughout his career he has greatly contributed to ROK-US alliance by taking the roles of following duties: AO of MND US Policy Division from 2003 to 2004, LNO of Zaytun Division during Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2005 to 2006, Deputy Director of MND US Policy Division from 2008 to 2010, LNO of JFCOM from 2010 to 2012, Chief Director of JCS Command Structure Team in 2015, Director of MND US Policy Division from 2015 to 2016, DDG of MND Policy Planning Bureau from 2016 to 2017 and DDG of MND North Korea Policy Bureau from 2018 to 2019.
BG Heo has received various citations and awards, including those from the President of the Republic of Korea, Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea, Minister of National Defense, and Chairman of the ROK Joint Chiefs of Staff. From the United States Military, BG Heo has been awarded Joint Service Commendation Medal from U.S. Secretary of Defense, the Army Commendation Medal, and Certificate of Appreciation for his dedication in support to Operation Iraqi Freedom.
BG Heo’s Civil Education includes a Bachelor’s degree in National Security from Korea Military Academy, a Master’s degree in Political Science from Yonsei University, and a Ph.D in International Relations from Kyunggi University
BG Heo is married to Mrs. Hyeok Jang and has a son and a daughter.
