Major General Tammy S. Smith
Deputy Commanding General - Sustainment, Eighth Army
Major General Smith was a 4-year Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship recipient and graduated from the University of Oregon in 1986, and commissioned into the Quartermaster Corps. Upon completion of the Quartermaster Officer Basic Course at Fort Lee, Virginia, she became a Platoon Leader in the 193rd Support Battalion at Fort Clayton, Panama from 1986 to 1989. She continued on to command the Logistic Support Detachment of Task Force 36 in Camino De La Paz, Costa Rica, and then attended the Quartermaster Officer Advanced Course at Fort Lee, Virginia. Following the Advanced Course, Major General Smith took command of Bravo Company, 3-28th Infantry Battalion (Basic Combat Training), at Fort Jackson, SC, and then served as the S-4 in the 1st Basic Combat training Brigade prior to transitioning over to the Army Reserves.
During her time in the Army Reserves, Major General Smith served as a Mobilization Planner, 99th Regional Readiness Command in Oakdale, PA from 1999 to 2002, and then as the Secretary to the General Staff of the 99th Regional Readiness Command in Coraopolis, PA from 2002 to 2004. Major General Smith fulfilled the role as the Chief of Army Reserve Affairs for United States Forces-Afghanistan (USFOR-A), OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM. She then fulfilled both roles as the Chief, General Officer Management Office at the Office of the Chief, and the Director of the Senior Leader Development Office in Arlington, VA. More recently, she was the Director, Human Capital Enterprise for the United States Army Reserves, and the Deputy Chief of Staff in the United States Army Reserves. Major General Smith last commanded the 98th Training Division (Initial Entry Training) at Fort Benning, Georgia.
Major General Smith holds a Doctor of Management degree in Organizational Leadership from the University of Phoenix. Her research focused on executive leader transitions into new organizations. She also holds a Masters of Arts in Management from Webster University, a Masters in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College, and an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Lincoln University in Jefferson City, MO.
Major General Smith’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit Medal (one oak leaf cluster), the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medals (two oak leaf clusters), Army Commendation Medals (four oak leaf clusters), the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Combat Action Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, Parachute Rigger Badge, and the Army Staff Badge.
Major General Smith is married to Tracey Hepner-Smith, formerly of Cleveland, OH.
