CSM Barry C. Wheeler entered the Army on April 23, 1973, and attended Basic Training at Fort Ord, California. He attended Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Polk, Louisiana. His first duty station was with the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry, as an 11H, Antiarmor Crewman, at Fort Hood, Texas
CSM Wheeler has served in every leadership position from Team Leader to Corps Command Sergeant Major. His other assignments have included 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry, Camp Hovey, Korea (1975-1976); 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry and 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry at Fort Riley, Kansas (1976-1980); Drill Sergeant, B Co, 2nd Battalion, 1st BCT Brigade, Fort Jackson, South Carolina (1981-1985); Platoon Sergeant and 1st Sergeant, E Co., 5th Battalion, 16th Infantry, Fort Riley, Kansas (1985-1990); 1st Sergeant, of E Co, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry and B Company, 299th Combat Support Company, Boeblingen, FRG (1st ID FWD) (1990-1991); 1st Sergeant of both A Company and Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry, Fort Carson, Colorado (1991-1994); Command Sergeant Major of the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas (March 1996-June 1998); Brigade Command Sergeant Major of the 2nd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division from June 1998 to August 2000, Division Command Sergeant Major of the 2nd Infantry Division (Korea) from September 2000 until October 2002 and the I Corps Command Sergeant Major, Fort Lewis, Washington from October 2002 until April 2005.
After a successful tour with I Corps, CSM Wheeler was selected to be the Command Sergeant Major of United Nations Command/Combined Forces Command/US Forces Korea/8th United States Army in May 2005.
CSM Wheeler is a graduate of Class 43 of the U.S. Army Sergeant's Major Academy.
CSM Wheeler's awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit (2 OLC), the Meritorious Service Medal (5OLC), Army Commendation Medal (2OLC), Army Achievement Medal (5OLC), Humanitarian Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal (9th award), NCO Development Ribbon (Numeral 4), Overseas Service Ribbon (Numeral 2), Army Service Ribbon, Expert Infantryman's Badge, Parachutist Badge and the Drill Sergeant Identification Badge.
